Rediscovering Essence And Meaning

In periods of uncertainty, especially at the onset of a new year, introspection often becomes a prevalent endeavor. This self-reflection critically examines our identities and directions as individuals, families, communities, and nations. During such times, we realize how inconsistency pervades our existence and how quickly perceptions and values can shift: love might evolve into indifference, the once-essential can seem trivial, and utility may fade into irrelevance.
The disillusionment arising from these shifts propelled me into a profound learning journey. I delved into the teachings of notable sages and mystics across various traditions, encompassing Buddhism, Hinduism, and the wisdom of figures like Zhuang Zi and Ramana Maharshi, while also exploring the science of consciousness. This exploration inspired the 'Design for Nothing' approach, which aims to instill a sense of purposeful creation for what we desire, while, in contrast, adopting 'no-thing'-ness as the ultimate goal. In non-dualistic philosophies, this 'no-thing' would refer to that which transcends the material world, being eternal, unchanging, and ultimately free.
The interconnectedness and inseparability of all matter at the fundamental level, or Oneness, as demonstrated by advancements in quantum physics and interpreted by some scientists as signs of a unique Pure Consciousness, have been foundational in my choice to pursue the Design for Nothing approach in my design practice. This led to rediscovered meaning and brought a sense of balance and clarity to my life. The interpretation one chooses to make of philosophical texts or scientific discoveries remains a personal choice. What you desire, you will see and make real. If you desire to shift your perception—applying the law of cause and effect—then you will see a shift.
As a designer, the practice has fostered a new focus, and I started creating designs and artworks that encourage a mindset of presence, going beyond material usability, stylistic desires, and personal ambitions. My projects, ranging from everyday products to interiors, are often thought-provoking, serving as communication devices and reminders of the shift to Oneness. An illustration of this concept are the 'Self-Questioning Devices'. My art practice, design consulting work, and new website are the embodiments of my evolved design philosophy and the application of the Design for Nothing approach.
